七次元先に存在するとされる別の宇宙「シエル」の中の星「アルシエル」を舞台にしたRPGです。詩を謳うことで様々な力を行使する「詩魔法」というものがあり、それを使う「レーヴァテイル」という種族と人間との関わりが物語の主軸です。詩魔法は、創作言語を使用した独特の楽曲で表現されています。
Ar tonelico is a RPG series which takes place in a planet "Ar Ciel" in the other space "Ciel" which is supposed to exist beyond seven dimensions from our space. There is "Song Magic" which can produce various effects; the main topic of the story is based on relationship between human and the race called "Reyvateil" that can use Song Magic. Song Magic is expressed as unique music using a constructed language.
アルシエルは過去に大惨事があり、高度な文明が滅びて地表に人が住めなくなった世界です。現在は、高度な文明時代の遺物である３本の塔のまわりになんとか人々が暮らしているという設定です。一見西洋ファンタジーでありながら、アジアな雰囲気もある世界観となっています。
In Ar Ciel, there was a huge disaster in the past, and high advanced civilization was destroyed. People are no longer able to live on the ground. Presently, people barely live around three towers which are relics of the past. Though it is seemed Western fantasy at first sight, the world contains Asian elements as well.
RPGとはいってもいろんな要素が詰め込まれており、
・詩魔法を使用するレーヴァテイルを守りながら戦う戦闘
・レーヴァテイルの少女との恋愛要素
・アトリエシリーズを踏襲したアイテム合成
・レーヴァテイルの精神世界をのぞく「ダイブ」システム
・やや独創的な方向のエロ
などがあります。
Even though it is considered RPG, there are various contents in the game:
--Battles protecting a Reyvateil using Song Magic
--love relationship with a Reyvateil girl
--Synthesis of items which follows that of Gust's Atelier series
--"Dive" system which enables to explore Reyvateil's spiritual world
--Some erotic contents which are in somewhat creative way
特にダイブが非常にユニークで、人物の多面性を見事に表現し、キャラクターに生きる人間としての奥深さを与えています。この深い心理描写が土屋作品の特徴のひとつです。プレイヤーにとって精神的にきつい表現もありますが、それを乗り越えてこそ絆を育むことができるというポリシーが、土屋作品全体を通して貫かれています。
Especially, Dive is very unique. It expresses multifaceted nature of a person dexterously, and it gives a character reality of living person. This deep psychological description is one of traits for Director Tsuchiya's works. There are some expressions which may seem offensive to a player, but the policy that you can develop ties with your loved one only by getting over those obstacles is carried throughout his works.
シリーズ３作で全て違う戦闘システムの中で、本来のイメージに最も近いのがアルトネリコ３です。ヒロインが詩魔法を使っているまわりで走り回って戦いますが、詩魔法はきまった歌詞やメロディがないので、戦っている間に状況に応じてどんどん変化していきます。このリアルタイムで音楽を生成するR.A.H.というシステムは他に類を見ないもので、高く評価されています。
Battle systems are all different for each title of the series. The system which reflects the original idea most faithfully is Ar tonelico 3. Characters run and fight around a heroine who are using Song Magic, but the song keeps changing every second depending on the current condition since Song Magic doesn't have fixed lyrics or melody. This battle system to generate music in real-time called R.A.H. hasn't been ever seen before and was rated high at the time.

※シェルノサージュは元々オンライン専用ソフトでしたが、完結後にオフライン版として発売されました。オンラインのDLCが全て収録されている他、一部の仕様変更、イベント追加等されています。（Re:Incarnationはオンライン版の中間で出たバージョンで、それまでのDLCや追加衣装が同梱されたものです。）アルノサージュもシェルノサージュOFFLINEと合わせて、一部追加をしてVitaで発売されました。DL版もあります。
※英語版はアルノサージュのみ発売されています。
*Ciel nosurge was originally for online only, it was re-released as offline version after the story ended. OFFLINE contains all DLCs of Online version, some minor changes and new events. (RE:Incarnation is the special version released in the middle of Online which includes DLCs at the time and additional costumes.) On the same day Ciel nosurge OFFLINE released, Ar nosurge PLUS was also released for Vita with some additional features. Download version is also available.
*Only Ar nosurge is available in English. (There are gameplay movies of Ciel nosurge with English translation available if you search in YouTube.)
リマスター版のシェルノサージュOFFLINEおよびアルノサージュPLUS（PS4/Switch/Steam）が2021/3/4にリリースされました！（今から買おうと思っている方にはそちらを強くお薦めします！）
CIEL NOSURGE OFFLINE and AR NOSURGE PLUS (PS4/Switch/Steam) has been released as remastered version on March 4, 2021 in Japan!!
(I strongly recommend them for new users who want to buy Surge Concerto
series now. However, English version is not currently available.)
サージュコンチェルトはアルトネリコと同じく、シエルの世界に存在する星「ラシェーラ」が舞台の中心になっているゲームです。アルノサージュはRPGですが、シェルノサージュはヒロインのイオンという少女とコミュニケーションをとるゲームです。また、このシリーズも創作言語を使用した独特な楽曲が特徴です。
Like Ar tonelico series, Surge Concerto series mainly takes place on a planet "Ra Ciela" which exist in the world of Ciel. Ar nosurge is a RPG, but Ciel nosurge is a game to communicate with a girl named Ion. Moreover, this series also features unique music with a constructed language.
アルノサージュはシェルノサージュの続編であり、２作セットを前提として設計されています。（また、できればアルトネリコ１も事前にプレイした方が楽しめると思います。）
Ar nosurge is a sequel to Ciel nosurge, basically they are considered as a set. (In addition, I think you can enjoy more if you play Ar tonelico in advance.)
シェルノサージュでは、イオンは記憶を失ってどこかわからない場所に一人で生活しており、プレイヤーは彼女との交流を通じて、彼女の記憶を取り戻すことを目的とします。彼女が全ての記憶を取り戻してからの続きがアルノサージュへとつながり、またその間他の場所では何が起こっていたのかを知ることができます。
In Ciel nosurge, Ion has lost her memory and lives alone in somewhere you don't know. The player's purpose is to get her memory back by communication with her. After she remembers everything, the story continues to Ar nosurge, and you are able to know what is happening in other places during the period.
アルノサージュのシステム自体はアルトネリコと大きく違わず、ヒロインを守って戦う戦闘・アイテム合成・ダイブなどができます。さらにザッピングシステムがあり、二人の主人公を切り替えて進めるようになっています。
The game system of Ar nosurge is not much different from that of Ar tonelico series. You can play battles protecting a heroine, Synthesis of items, and Dive. Moreover, there's zapping system to switch between two heroes.
サージュコンチェルトシリーズがアルトネリコシリーズ（また他の多くのゲーム作品）と大きく違うのは、ゲームの中の主人公キャラを操作するのではなく、プレイヤーは自分自身として関わるという形になっていることです。フィクションとわかっていながら、自分自身が直接参加し、画面の向こう側と対話する感覚を味わえるところが、サージュコンチェルトの画期的な点です。この作品では、実質攻略対象といえるのはイオンだけですが、私自身を含めて今も彼女に思い入れがあるプレイヤーは少なくないと思います。
How Surge Concerto series is definitely different from Ar tonelico series (and many other video games) is that a player is not supposed to control a hero character within the game, but to interact with the world directly as him/her own self. Although you know it's a fiction, you're required to be involved in the incident directly, and you can feel as if you communicate with people behind the screen. That's the epochal point of Surge Concerto series. In this title, actually Ion is the only one you can fall in love with, but I suppose not little number of players still have strong feelings for her, including myself.
